Just short of 300 reviews, this is the end. Winter approaches, and I’m already hearing news of closures amongst my top 20 list. I’ve had a quiet season anyway; most of the hard work was done last year. To those of you who’ve stayed with me as we munched our way across Devon, I salute you. To those yet to come, treat this site as an archive since it will not be updated any more.
I just have one final review for you, my absolute and utter, top-most recommended, wonderfullest, amazing-most, delectable, and deliciousest cream tea spot (based solely on grace and flavour, without the pressure of cost): with a 4/5 for grace, and a 6/5 for flavour, making my only 10/10 – The Old Forge in Chagford. Over the summer, its proprietor and chef, Richard, produced a wonderful ‘scone of the month’ alongside his regular fare – a tangy, richly sweet, raspberry and white chocolate scone, accompanied by Tayberry jam. Following this has been his recent Apple and Cinnamon Dappy – a kind of cinammon roll but made with scone dough. I almost cried it was so gorgeous, with the thickly opulent cream gently melting into it, and a superfluously delightful apple and cinammon jam nestling on top.
Goodbye Devon cream teas! May we meet again…
